This is a long post, apologies in advance.

We are looking at adding a second ADU on one property. This is on 1.65 acres. The primary house is in the front of the lot, there is a small 500sqft ADU about 30 ft behind it.

Both primary house and ADU#1 face the same direction, toward the street. (#1 only has a view of the back of the primary house)

Behind ADU #1 is a solar panel array, on the floor with 18 panels. We need to put ADU #2 behind the solar panels.

The dilemma:

The house can only be X amount of feet away from the solar panels so that way they can use the same array.

So putting the house forward facing, in the same direction as #1 and the primary house is not an option because your whole front yard would be the underside of solar panels.

We wanted to face the house backwards, towards the back of the property that would have a view of mountains in the kitchen and living room but also a view of the neighbors back yard.

Our in laws are giving us major pushback saying it’s unheard for a house to be backwards, and are convinced the property value will drop significantly if it was placed backwards.

They want the house to be placed sideways, which would leave the master bedroom and sliding glass door facing the solar panels, leave the living room and kitchen with only a view of a neighbors backyard and with it being sideways would cut off significant natural airflow from the back of the house and the sides.

Anyone with experience /picture examples/ links can you help us show them that it wouldn’t hurt the property value to have the house backwards or show us that yes it would.

Thank you!!!
