Currently house hunting and weighing my options for commuting and home costs. Where I live a modest ranch (fine for me, no kids, not planning on them) that is 50-60 min away from work is an average of 330/330K.
The same home that is approximately 30-35 min from my work is an average of 390/400K.
The homes farther out are more ideal for my budget and goals (retiring at 60, being able to add the leftover money to my neglected ROTH; I do have an 80% pension upon retirement), but the thought of commuting that long makes me feel a little sick. Currently commuting 25 min from rental. Buying a more expensive home would probably mean 4-5 more years of work. I am currently 43.
The homes farther out would also lengthen the driving time to family members homes from 30 min to one hour, and from 50 min to 75 min. I do like to visit my nieces and nephews a few times a month.
TIA for any wisdom or insight on this dilemma.
