About two years ago I had an issue with an apartment complex. I never figured out exactly what their problem was with me but they were pissed. There was a guy that I had never seen before that said I was too loud in my apartment. Literally the first time I ever saw him I said “ did you just call the police on me?” He said yes, that I was too loud and it was his civic duty to call the police on me until I was evicted. He called me a bitch and told me not to ever approach him again. Then he began standing in the hallways waiting for me to arrive. The police were called multiple times on me about the noise. Even times where I was asleep at like 11pm the police were coming. The same police officer came over and over and said “all we hear is footsteps but the noise needs to stop. If it’s your child, you need to control your child’s footsteps. “ literally my child was 3. I ended up sending them I deployment letter shortly after this situation started and they were obviously pissed. The complex stated,”We didn’t know you were in the military, send us proof.” (Btw,I had to file a harassment charge against the police officer. After that, I never had any more visits from the police. Which goes to tell you there was no noise issue to begin with.) I told them the deployment letter is proof and they sent me an email stating that it was not. I sent them proof of my contract, and they did not respond. I reached out again and they said that they would not let me out of the lease because my duty station was not 200 miles away. My duty station was about 450-500 miles away and I sent them proof. They then stated that the deployment letter did not contain my new duty station so they could not honor my deployment letter and that they looked in the system and they did not see where I had to go to deployment. I managed to go to court before I moved and the judge told me I needed to pay them $4k. I emailed the complex and told them that I was trying to resolve this before it went on my credit and they responded saying that there was damage to the apartment, food left in the refrigerator and a key not returned. With those calculated in, the total debt was $20k. They put $11k on my credit report and I’m trying to get a house. I already contacted a pro bono lawyer and they said that my next duty station had to be on my deployment letter. I’ve had multiple deployment letters and none of my orders ever had my next destination on them. I even gave the complex my commanders contact info:email and phone #, they never reached out. I was told that even if I pay this debt off it would still be on my credit report, it would just show payed in full. The creditors told me that they don’t even send proof that things are paid off because in the past people have used them improperly. I have no clue what to do now. I’m a fully disabled vet now and I’m just trying to get a house. I’ve even spoken with someone to start the process and they said something about the $11k. If ANYONE can help me,please do.
