Employers pushing for further studies - I don’t want to owe them money

My employers are pushing me to apply for further study at university, I already ‘owe them’ as they paid for my previous course whilst under employment with them.

I would like to leave when my current project I am working on finishes at the end of this year (2025) and go travelling, I am torn on how to play the situation and worried on the consequences of it being public that I plan on leaving, the company is fairly small with less than 30 employees.

I am ‘tied’ to them for another 2 years, if I want to leave I need to pay ££££ so I’m not sure I would get sacked, but then I am hesitant that my director won’t want to invest any more time in me as I’m still in the early stages of my career.

I see the possible options:

  1. I get sacked and the company takes the loss on my university fees and invest the time into someone else.

  2. They make my life difficult once I tell them my wishes to leave in the hope I quit and therefore I have to pay them.

  3. They see I don’t want to leave part way through a project and leave on good terms once the project has finished (we are 6 months into an 18 month project)

  4. I keep quiet and apply for university knowing that I have no intentions to be here and deal with it closer to the time.

Any knowledge and assistants would be great!
