It is not so much the house as the street. I am not sure what I hope to gain by posting this, other than to vent. We bought our house in 2023 at a 5.5% interest rate for $745,000. We looked at about 40 houses before settling on this one, with a few prior offers on houses we didn’t get. We live in an extremely high cost of living area, and our price range limited us. This house checked off many boxes, and we reached a point where, due to timing, we had to make a move. I did not realize the noise levels at first. The house is on a double yellow, and it is a moderately busy street, with about 3000 vehicles traveling per day. It feeds into a main road that travels about 20,000 vehicles per day, including trucks. Due to the curvature of the road, our backyard is maybe 200 ft from this main road.
We live 30 minutes outside of Manhattan, in the suburbs. The apartment we lived in before buying the house never bothered me, despite the road being much busier. However, I am tortured by the traffic noise in and around this house. I am not surprised by the noise, but surprised by the extent to which it is taking a toll on my mental health. I refuse to go in the backyard. I am woken up at night. I am completely miserable, to the point that I have gone back into therapy.
I want to move ASAP, but realistically we need to stay another year or two. We are expecting a third child and need more space anyway. My husband does not want to put any money into the house since we are trying to think about it as short term thing, but in my opinion, a fence and some other sound proofing techniques may be worthwhile to preserve my mental health in the interim. My husband and kids are not at all bothered by the noise.
I am just so full of regret and envious of anyone who loves where they live.
