Have what seems like an opportunity. Older lady next door, her husband fell ill, they have too much house. We are a bit space-challenged. Our rancher would be ideal for them if he were ever to make it home from hospital. We just bought less than 3 years ago, so we have a long way to go on a mortgage. They own outright, I assume.
She wants to keep a U.S. address while dealing with his care (he's in Canadaian hospital, we are in WA). She seemed excited about the idea of switching houses. But of course we'd still have a mortgage at our house. Then I thought, what if we sold our house, used the proceeds to buy theirs if she gave us a good price. We'd still have to pay today's interest rate if we had to take a mortgage out for next door.
Other option is we sell. Rent from her. Sit on the ownership sidelines for awhile, save money...
Their house is objectively nicer, bigger, insane view. That's the real temptation. To upgrade with an e-z move, no agents involved. But there's really no way to make this work, unless I'm missing something. That's what I need help with, are we missing something? Spouse and I came to the conclusion last night there's no feasible way, but we are meeting with the neighbor and her son tonight to discuss options.

House exchange. There's really no way to do this, right?
