So I’m on a film production course and our final module was about trying to get employment. To make a long story short me and a bunch of other students decided we didn’t want to work in the film industry and asked if we were allowed to do a different project (some people wrote a chapter for a book they wanted to write, others made a website for a woodworking business that they wanted to start etc) . I was given permission to make animated sprites and learn code using Godot 4 as I intended to get a trainee job at a local company that specialises in 2D art and arcade games.
I checked in with the company themselves and they said if I wanted to get a trainee position I would need to teach myself the basics of 2D art and code and I could be considered (if I applied like everyone else)
Now, I’m not going to pretend that my game demo was a masterpiece and that I turned up to every single lecture - the demo was ok and my attendance suffered a little due to problems back home (which I informed the professors about)
I got given an F on the assessment - the final one of the year which is making up a huge part of my overall grade, because, and I quote “all it shows is that you like video games and that you didn’t add foley”. Everything else was in the demo, every asset was made from scratch, I coded player and npc movement, added collisions, inventories, home menu, dialogue, Y-sorting etc.
Keep in mind I emailed this professor and had 1 on 1 meetings on zoom where I outlined what I wanted to do and he personally approved it. He’s failed me on my final projects the first and second year of university (while giving my partners, who I did the work for btw, decent grades) he is the only professor who does this, but now I can’t graduate. I reached out to him a month before the project was due to make sure that it was still okay to continue with this idea but he suddenly stopped responding to me, and only me (I have checked with other students on this).
Do I have any options to fight this? I have my rationale detailing how I want to work as a 2D artist for games, and what I set out to do with this project ( which is also part of the assessment, but I genuinely don’t think he even read it as he kept alluding to me being a sound designer)
Even though I don’t want to work in film anymore I still wanted to graduate with my friends because I’ve worked hard as hell the past 3 years and I feel like he genuinely has it out for me. If the circumstances were different I would hold my hands up and be like “yeah that’s on me” but it’s the fact that he’s the only lecturer who’s ever done this , has only ever acted like this towards me alone, and then didn’t even give valid reasons for my low grade.
