we are college students, and the master bedroom is shared by two people and our total rent is $3500. according to just square footage, the master is 40% of the private space and the other two are each 30%. the master bathroom is also less than half the size of the other bathroom, only has a pedestal sink, ie no storage or countertop space, and no exhaust fan. the walkway leading into the master takes up 52 out of 132 sq ft, and is not wide enough to put any furniture.
last year, rent was $3300, and each of us in the master paid $710 while the other two paid $940. we always thought that was unfair, and believed that we should have been paying $660. they were very unwilling to lower our cost, and actually thought we should pay $760, so somehow we ended up conceding. this year, we are trying to push for $660 again, despite the rent increase, but now all of a sudden they’re saying the room is worth $1400 no matter what because of square footage (even tho we paid more than that last year when rent was cheaper??). we are unable to come to an agreement as to what’s considered a fair price for the room.
