I live on a small dead end single lane road in WI that was believed to be private for the past 60 years. I have only lived here for 7 years. There are an additional 10-15 private residences on the road as well and over the decades everyone has contributed for small repairs, snow removal, etc. It was recently determined by a new property survey that the road is actually public. The road has been poorly maintained and is in need of significant repairs if not a full tear out and update. Anyone have experience with what might happen next? I’m worried about the township handing down a special tax assessment to help foot the bill for their neglect of this road which they “believed” to be private.
