We moved into a new house in June 2023. In August 2023 we paid the property taxes for that house which were $2500 fast forward to this summer we got a bill for 2024 summer taxes and they are $3900. I called the city hall and asked why they were raised so high and she just said “you weren’t informed of the cap law In Michigan” I replied with “no I wasn’t” she transferred me accessors office but he wasn’t available can someone explain to me in simple terms what this mean? I’ve tried to google it but I can’t find anything.

Edit: thank you so all the help I found an article that helped me understand it. So just in case anyone was curious in Michigan the year after ownership is transferred the property tax is uncapped. Normally the rate won’t be higher than 5% but because we just bought the house last year the rate is uncapped. But thank you for all the help when the bill came caught me by surprise!
