Hey everyone,
I'm a younger real estate agent (I got my license at 18 and have been at it for 2 years part-time while working a full-time job). Today, I had a crazy encounter with a client that ended in a physical altercation, and I'm not sure how to proceed.
Here's what happened: I was showing a buyer a property, and when we got to the patio, he got upset about the noise from a nearby busy street. I assured him the trees would block it out, as I live nearby and know the area well.
He got visibly irritated, and said, "The trees are not going to block out the noise, trust me I would know." as he reached for the door to get back inside, he bumped into me telling me to move out of the way. I said, "Oh I'm sorry." and at the end of the statement I kind of laughed. He then turned to me and swatted my notebook and data sheets to the ground. I told him to calm down, and he squared up to fight. I laughed it off, but he pushed me down. In self-defense, I threw a punch that connected with his jaw. Things escalated into a full-blown fight until a neighbor intervened and called the police.
Now, I'm being asked if I want to press charges. I'm still processing everything and not sure what the best move is.
Any advice on how to handle this situation? Should I press charges or try to forgive him? I have never dealt with a situation like this before and need advice.
Thanks for any insights you can provide.
