Renting Room VS Duplex in DFW!?

I live in the DFW area, I'm a veteran. I was wondering if anyone has considered buying a duplex an renting one side to a family or buying a SFH and just renting out extra rooms, and what you ultimately decided on. I also wonder if anyone is doing both or has done both and what they would recommend. I have owned a triplex before and logically if I could find one I would try to purchase it but they don't come up that often in my 425k price budget.
