We've lived in our home for just over 2 years and have been notified that TXDOT will be taking our property to widen the road in front of our house. They have not been extremely forthcoming in how this process will work but have already sent a team to appraise the property. I don't necessarily have an issue with moving. My problem is that we live in a great school zone (one of the reasons we moved here) so is an area where taxes are high, and there is not currently any homes for sale even a little bit close to what we paid for house two years ago (at least 200k over what we paid). This is not to mention we had a great interest rate when we bought this house and rates have gone up quite a bit. I don't want to move out of my city but don't think we could afford to start over here at the rates homes are currently going for. I understand the state must pay 'fair market value' but what does compensation look like in terms of ensuring we allowed to continue our lives where we are? Any experience dealing with this process? TIA
