Mphil in Sociology (Margalinity and Exclusion) at Cambridge vs. International Migration and Public Policy at LSE?
Due to a lot of stuff in my personal life, I have not had a lot of time to think but that’s for another day. I am an international student from Australia and just received an offer to study an MPhil in Sociology (Marginality and Exclusion) at Cambridge and a MSc in International Migration and Public Policy at LSE. I am very lucky (like I know incredibly privileged) that my Dad is willingly to pay for either so I have the incredibly privileged problem of deciding which one. I am trying to consider the lifestyle, the academics, and where these Masters will take my career (although I am not entirely sure where I want my career to go.)
I have been loving tutoring at the moment (as I am working to save to actually move to England) and I am realising I really want to be able to work with people (honestly working with kids is the best job ever tbh) in my career. I definitely do not want an office job (where i sit all day) and I don’t think Id love being an academic endless I could do a lot of advocacy work on the side because I see how global structures need to be critiqued but I want to try and do something about it.
I am leaning towards LSE because from what I have heard it’s a more left leaning institution (which aligns with my values) and I feel like a bit of sellout going to Cambridge when I am studying social justice. However, most people in my life want me to go to Cambridge because they say it will be a much better and more social experience and then I get to say that “I graduated from Cambridge.” Social connections and networks are also very important to me. Although I am planning to live at a postgrad residental college at LSE so I am sure I would meet people.
Any advice would be really appreciated!
