What are the reasons buyers switched lenders 2 weeks before closing?

While our house was under contract, the homes in the area and next door price went down. Additionally, the buyers' agent informed our realtor that the buyers had changed lenders. Do you believe the buyers changed lenders or were never approved at all? So, another appraisal was here last Friday. Given that I won't renegotiate, why would they take a chance on a lower appraisal, in which case they wouldn't have a chance to be approved at all?
