So let say I make $3,000 a month and looking for an apartment. There are 2 options:
Apartment 1: rent $1000 (30% of my income) but the neighborhood looks like some questionable guys living there and may be drug dealers. The overall area is mixed of families, single, professionals, low income, blue collars… so not all are bad. The complex also been on the news where drug dealers actually did live here.
Apartment 2: rent $1,500 (50% of my income) and looks like more professionals live here. So far I don’t see much sketchy things here so I guess the higher price may weed out the bad ones.
The size, amenities, location,… of both apartment are almost the same. I don’t social with other people, work and come home sleep, then next day go to work. Roommate is not an option since the rate is for 1 bedroom apartment And I don’t want roommates. If you are in my shoes, would you pay 30% income for the cheap apartment? Or pay 50% for the better one?
